Garden Variety
One of the first spring activities this year, besides winter cleanup, was to build a few small raised beds in the small plot of yard that gets a steady flow of sunlight even when the neighboring trees fill in. The tiered beds are made of 2x6 cedar lumber and filled with a nice mixture of topsoil enriched with peat and some added organic vegetable soil. They will primarily serve for a few key summer vegetables (bok choy, brussel sprouts, celery and root, beets and snap peas) and a lot of fresh herbs (sage, fennel, dill, cilantro, parsley, chives, garlic, thyme, oregano, majoram and mints). A membership at Red Earth Farm, a CSA (community supported agriculture) program, is going to provide the bulk of our summer fruits and vegetables.
